Teaching Philosophy

I believe that all students are unique individuals with varying needs, learning styles, and goals.  My teaching style is catered to the individual needs of each student, and it is my hope that each will feel safe, accepted, and valued during their time working with me.  I teach students of all ages, from kindergarteners through retired adults. While the goal of each student may vary based on age and ability, I want all of my students to enjoy making music. In addition to competent harpists or pianists, I seek to help students become well rounded musicians who have a comprehensive understanding of music in its historical and theoretical contexts. To this end, I strive to create a culture for learning by utilizing a learner centered approach – where students can actively respond and interact with the material being taught. Along with repertoire and technique, lessons include transposition, arranging/improvising, sight-reading, music theory, and music history. It is my hope that students who study with me become independent, capable, lifelong musicians.
